Leicester Country Club

OUR HISTORY

Remember, when you hold, or attend, an event at the Leicester Country Club, you are actually sitting right in the middle of history. Located on some of the tallest ground between Boston harbor and Connecticut river, the town of Leicester lies 46 miles west from Boston, 6 miles from Worcester and 44 north west from Providence RI. First settled in 1713, the town’s Indian name was “Towlaid”. In 1837, the town’s population was just 2,122. The Leicester Country Club was founded after the end of the Civil War in 1896.

Leicester has abundant water from the French River, and branches of the Connecticut and Blackstone Rivers. This constant flowing water, afforded wealthy mill owners, perfect sites for numerous factories. At one time, there were five woolen mills in the town, and also factories for machines, hand cards, machine cards, chairs, cabinet ware, scythes, leather, boots and shoes. These prosperous mill and factory owners were the founding force behind the Leicester Country Club and it’s golf course, or “golfing club”, as it was known back then.
